The Systems Alliance Marine Special Reconnaissance Group, colloquially known as "SpecRec", was a Special Operations Force of the Alliance Marine Corps principally responsible for conducting special reconnaissance operations on planetary surfaces. Special Reconnaissance Groups were attached to Marine Divisions, and provided both the Division and its higher Marine Expeditionary Force with the capability to collect operational and strategic intelligence. Special Reconnaissance Groups also subsumed the role of Air Naval Gunfire Liaisons, and also acted as joint fire observers to direct artillery fires, orbital fires, and air strikes.

It was comprised of two principal components: Marine Close Reconnaissance Groups and Marine Deep Reconnaissance Groups, both of which were disparate and had separate responsibilities.

  • Close Reconnaissance Groups, known as Systems Alliance Marine Division Reconnaissance, conducted reconnaissance in the close battlespace and typically collected operationally-pertinent intelligence to support Division operations in the immediate future. Two Division Reconnaissance Battalions were attached to each Marine Division.
  • Deep Reconnaissance Groups, known as Systems Alliance Marine Force Reconnaissance, conducted reconnaissance in the deep battlespace to provide strategic intelligence, and were also capable of fulfilling other special operations responsibilities, such as direct action, counterterrorism, and combat search and rescue. One Force Reconnaissance Company was attached to each Marine Division.
